Imagine living on another planet. Sounds impossible? Not with NASA’s CHAPEA mission! They’re looking for brave volunteers to experience what life on Mars might be like – right here on Earth.
What is the CHAPEA Mission?
CHAPEA stands for Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog. It’s a series of year-long missions where a crew of four people will live and work in a special ‘Mars house’ designed to mimic the challenges of a real Mars mission.
Think of it as intense astronaut training without ever leaving Earth. This mission will help NASA study:
- The Physical Stuff: How healthy bodies and minds handle being stuck in one place for a long time.
- The Practical Stuff: What kind of problems might pop up with equipment, food supplies, and communication when you’re super far from home.
- The Teamwork Stuff: How to live and work well with a small group of people under stressful conditions.
Inside the ‘Mars House’
The habitat, called Mars Dune Alpha, is a 1,700-square-foot home 3D-printed to feel like a Mars base. The crew will wear spacesuits when they go on pretend spacewalks, fix problems with equipment, and even try growing their own food. It’ll be tough, with limited internet and a delay in contacting their support team back on Earth.
Are YOU the Right Fit for Mars?
Being a pretend Martian isn’t for everyone. NASA is looking for:
- US citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 30 and 55.
- People in great physical and mental shape.
- Non-smokers who speak English fluently.
- Those with backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM fields).
Why Embark on This Mission?
This isn’t just a year-long camping trip in a cool house. Participating in CHAPEA has major benefits:
- Change History: Be part of preparing humans to explore Mars for real!
- Science!: Help find solutions to the big challenges of Mars travel.
- Challenge Yourself: See how far you can push your limits both mentally and physically.
