As Apple gears up to release the highly anticipated iOS 17.2 update, beta testers are already exploring the new features, with one in particular gaining attention—the option to change default notification sounds and haptics. While this addition is a welcome step toward personalization, some users are questioning why such a basic customization feature took so long to be implemented.
iOS 17.2 Beta 4: Customizing Default Alerts
The fourth beta of iOS 17.2 reveals a notable feature that allows users to personalize default notification sounds. Within the Sounds & Haptics settings, a new “Default Alerts” setting has been introduced, enabling users to select the sound for all incoming notifications, excluding texts, mail alerts, and calendar alerts, which already had customization options. Users can now choose any of the text tones as the default notification sound.
Furthermore, the update includes an option to modify the default haptic feedback. This feature addresses the change in haptic alert introduced in iOS 17, allowing users to revert to the original or customize it according to their preferences.
Overdue Customization Option
While the addition of the customization feature is certainly appreciated, some users express frustration that iPhones did not have this option years ago. The ability to set default notification sounds and haptics is considered a fundamental customization feature that many users expected to be available much earlier.
Anticipated Highlight: The Journal App
Apart from the customization feature, the iOS 17.2 update is expected to introduce several other enhancements. One of the most anticipated features is the Journal app, showcased by Apple at WWDC in June. Described as an “all-new way to appreciate life’s moments and preserve memories,” the Journal app is set to debut with the iOS 17.2 update. However, it’s worth noting that, initially, the Journal app will be exclusive to iPhones, with uncertainty about its compatibility with iPads and Macs.
Release Expectations
As iOS 17.2 enters its fourth beta, users are eagerly awaiting the public release. The update is anticipated to be rolled out by the end of 2023, following a similar timeline to the previous iOS 16.2 update, which was released on December 16, 2022. With a range of new features and improvements, iOS 17.2 promises to enhance the user experience on Apple devices.
